Acylcarnitines are important intermediates in fatty acid oxidation.  Elevations in specific acylcarnitines can be diagnostic for several fatty acid oxidation disorders and organic acidurias.

Specimen requirements: Sodium heparin plasma.  Sample can be shipped at room temperature overnight or the plasma can be removed and shipped frozen.  Alternatively, a blood spot may be sent via standard mail.

Transport: Samples should be sent overnight express.  Samples can also be sent frozen.

Standard of Analysis: Analysis will be done by tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS).

Turn around time: Analysis will be complete within five days.

Special request: Any type of special request must be made directly to the laboratory at the time the specimen is submitted.

Report: Written reports with interpretation will be mailed and, when abnormalities exist, the report will be made by telephone.  Results may be sent by fax when requested.
