Summer Course for Science Teachers

Contemporary Topics in Genetics - A Hands-On Approach

June 22-29, 2009

Location: Campus of the Greenwood Genetic Center, JC Self Research Institute of Human Genetics

Course Credits: Three graduate hours through the Department of Biological Sciences at Lander University. Hours may be applied for re-certification or to a graduate program of study.

Course Description

This course examines current topics in the field of human and medical genetics. Instruction by genetic professionals will provide accurate representation of these topics and serve to clarify much of the public media's information.

The course includes didactic instruction, but primary emphasis is on break-out sessions, allowing for small group interactions and hands-on activities appropriate for classroom use.

Course Objectives. The course will

  • provide accurate analyses of current and often controversial topics in genetics
  • involve students in discovery and hands-on activities
  • illustrate the role of genetics in human disease and disorders
  • provide new activities for classroom incorporation including an innovative approach to introducing the scientific method
  • offer opportunities to discuss the ethical and social implications of genetics on society

Course Requirements: Contemporary Topics in Genetics is a graded, graduate level course requiring:

  • attendance for all 5 days of instruction, approximately 40 hours
  • participation in all break-out sessions and activities
  • completion of any assigned reading
  • selection of 1-2 course topics and a description of how these could be included in current curriculum, identifying South Carolina Science Standards in the content
Examples of Lecture Topics
  • Stem cells: debate and promise
  • Proteomics
  • New therapies and the question of expense: medical ethics
  • Dog genetics: models for human disease
  • Beyond the medical condition
  • How do we find genes?

Activities: Break-out sessions, allowing for small group interactions and hands-on activities for classroom use. Sessions will highlight:

  • Genetic counseling
  • Cytogenetics
  • Molecular genetics
  • Metabolic genetics
  • Genetic disease and the process of discovery

Special Topic Seminar and Dinner: Thursday evening, June 25th

  • Evening dinner with GGC faculty followed by special topic seminar

Class size is limited to 25 participants

Registration deadline is May 22, 2009

  • Any cancellations made after June 5th will be reimbursed, less $75.00 for processing costs
  • Registration fee after May 22 is $175.00

Accommodations: A block of rooms at the Fairfield Inn and Suites will be held for course participants at a rate of $74.00 plus taxes per room per night. Please contact the hotel at 864-330-3300 by May 22nd to make your reservation. Rooms are being held under the name Genetics Summer Course or GGC. 

Housing Option #2: Dormitory space (Lide Apartments) is available at Lander University for $15.85 per night. There is a required, refundable room damage fee of $75.00. On-campus parking is free of charge.

Cost: $150.00 is due with registration form. This fee covers all course materials, daily morning coffee, and lunch. South Carolina teachers receive three credit hours through Lander University's Department of Biological Sciences.
