| Contemporary Topics in Genetics
- A Hands-On Approach (June 19-23, 2006) Course Description
This course examines current topics in the field of human and
medical genetics. Instruction by genetic professionals will provide accurate
analyses of these topics and serve to clarify much of the public media's
information.
Course emphasis will focus on known results of the Human
Genome Project (HGP) and how these results are and will be used in
healthcare. The course includes didactic instruction, but primary emphasis
is on break-out sessions, allowing for small group interactions and hands-on
activities appropriate for classroom use.
Course Objectives. The course will
- provide accurate analyses of current and often
controversial topics in genetics
- involve students in discovery and hands-on activities
- emphasize the significance of the HGP and implications
for human disease and disorders
- provide new activities for classroom incorporation
including an innovative approach to introducing the scientific method
- offer opportunities to discuss the ethical and social
implications of genetics on society
Course Requirements: Contemporary Topics in Genetics is a graded, graduate
level course requiring:
- attendance for all 5 days of instruction, approximately
40 hours
- participation in all break-out sessions and activities
- completion of all assigned reading
- a written proposal on how the course content will be
included in classroom instruction

held for course participants at a rate of $73.00 per room per night. Please

NEW THIS YEAR: Housing is also available in
apartment-style dorms on Lander University campus. Each unit consists of a
furnished sitting area with small kitchen and four individual bedrooms. Cost

Cost: $150.00 is due with
registration form. This fee covers all course materials, daily morning
coffee and daily lunch. South Carolina teachers receive 3 credit hours
through Lander University's Department of Biological Sciences. Registration fee after May
16th is
