Since its inception in 1974, the GGC has identified education as one of its major institutional objectives. The Education Division is committed to developing genetic understanding and literacy in multiple audiences including middle and high school students, undergraduate students, the public, teaching professionals, and health care providers.

Our Educational Programs Include:

Community Outreach - Guest speakers are available for: local and statewide school systems (middle and high school classes), civic or faith-based organizations, museums, libraries, and other adult gatherings.

 

Speaker's Bureau - If you cannot visit us in Greenwood, we look forward to the opportunity to come to you.  Presentation topics include but are not limited to:

  • An introduction to the GGC: Who We Are and What We Do

  • Genetic Counseling and Other Careers in Genetics

Professional Development: Workshops and Conferences - The Education Division is available to coordinate and conduct workshops at your school, district, or work location. Workshops and conferences are full day or half-day events, emphasizing genetic content and developed to the needs of your group.

 

South Carolina Genetics Conclave - Established in 1979 to increase the understanding of developing areas in genetics, to expand awareness by presenting interesting case studies, and to promote communication among the southeastern community.  The GGC hosts the Conclave twice each year. Genetic counselors, M.D. and Ph.D. geneticists, primary care physicians, medical residents, genetics laboratory technologists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and other interested medical professionals are invited to attend.

 

Summer Internship for undergraduate students - GGC offers a summer internship program for highly qualified college students. The GGC provides 6 paid internship positions each summer, but also places students in volunteer and shadowing positions in the diagnostic and research labs throughout the school year.

 

Tours of the GGC - School groups, adult organizations, professional groups and interested individuals are encouraged to call and schedule a tour of our facility.  Groups tours include a brief introductory presentation followed by a walking tour of our research and diagnostic laboratories.

Residency in M.D. Clinical Genetics
  • The clinical genetics residency at the Greenwood Genetic Center is designed to provide intensive postgraduate clinical experience with heritable conditions. Residents are required to have completed a primary care residency program (family practice, internal medicine, OB/GYN or pediatrics) in the United States.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs
  • The Greenwood Genetic Center operates South Carolina's only Medical Genetics training program and is one of 43 accredited programs in the nation to offer training in four or more specialty areas. The Center's Postdoctoral Genetics Training Program is designed for individuals with an M.D. or Ph.D. degree seeking academic, clinical, and research careers in human and medical genetics. The programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (for M.D. Clinical Genetics) and the American Board of Medical Genetics (Clinical Cytogenetics, Clinical Molecular Genetics, and Clinical Biochemical Genetics).
GRADUATE STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS (Click for 2008 application details)

The J.C. Self Research Institute of the Greenwood Genetic Center and the Clemson University Department of Genetics and Biochemistry (http://www.clemson.edu/genbiochem/) have five pre-doctoral fellowships available in human genetics for students starting their Ph.D. programs in 2008. Selected students will work with faculty members specializing in human molecular genetics, bioinformatics, or genetic epidemiology.
