The Team Approach to Healthcare

Last month we discussed complex birth defects that can result in severe malformations of the head and face. Each year more than 80,000 individuals are born with these abnormalities. Many of these craniofacial anomalies, including facial clefts, are due to chance mutations or changes in our genes that may or may not be transmitted to future generations. Certain genetic syndromes called craniosynostosis syndromes are potentially inheritable, but most are due also to isolated, chance genetic events.

Children with these complex birth defects often require comprehensive care including surgery, nutritional guidance, speech therapy, orthodontics and genetic evaluation. In the past, families were left to their own initiatives to find specialists in these various areas.

In 1996, the FACET (Facial Anomalies and Clefting Evaluation Team) program was started through the Speech, Hearing and Learning Center in Greenville. FACET exists to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to healthcare and serves both privately insured patients and CRS sponsored patients (Children's Rehabilitative Services).

FACET is under the co-directorship of David Pence, speech/language pathologist with the Speech, Hearing and Learning Center in Greenville and Dr. Curtis Rogers, clinical geneticist and director of the Greenville office of the Greenwood Genetic Center. The FACET clinic meets monthly, serving approximately 20-25 patients each clinic session. Children and adults are referred to the clinic through CRS or private physicians.

The multidisciplinary clinical team includes plastic surgeons, pediatricians, clinical geneticists and counselors, nutritionists and other specialists. The team develops a coordinated care plan for the patient, sees the patient at one location serving to save families time, expense and unneeded stress.
