'Care for Rare' Family Event Supports GGC Foundation

October 22, 2014 – David and Victoria Braddock excitedly welcomed twin girls, Madison and Mackenzie, in the spring of 2012, but their joy quickly turned to fear when one of their daughters was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder. Madison's newborn screen, a blood test performed on all babies in the first two days of life, discovered that she had glutaric acidemia, type 1, also known as GA1. Madison must follow a carefully managed diet to avoid the severe complications of the disorder, which can be devastating, even lethal, if not detected and treated early.

September 26, 2014 – Faculty, board members and friends of the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) gathered Thursday evening at the Greenwood Federal Building to celebrate the Center's four decades of providing genetic services for the people of South Carolina and contributions to the field of medical genetics.


Affymetrix Honors Greenwood Family with Race the Helix Donation

September 24, 2014 – Race the Helix, an annual 5K race and 1 mile run/walk to benefit the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) Foundation received a major gift this week. Affymetrix, a leader in genomics analysis whose mission is to enable the translation of biological knowledge into routine practice, presented $5,000 to Greenwood's Stephen and Jodi Shenal on Monday. The family, along with GGC representatives Dr. Steve Skinner, Dr. Mike Friez and Dr. Alka Chaubey, traveled to California to participate in a corporate event at the company's headquarters. The Shenals shared with Affymetrix's employees, their diagnostic journey with their daughter, Ryleigh, who has a rare chromosomal deletion. Her diagnosis was made at GGC by one of Affymetrix's chromosomal microarray products.


GGC Family Speaks at Affymetrix Corporate Event

September 23, 2014 – With a goal of raising awareness of genetic disorders, Stephen and Jodi Shenal have always been very open in discussing their experiences in raising a child with special needs. They have been vocal champions of the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) since their daughter, Ryleigh, was first diagnosed at the Center, and have supported the GGC Foundation through their annual Race the Helix event. Now this couple, along with their children, Tyler, 10, and Ryleigh, 4, find themselves as corporate speakers invited to share their experiences with the 300+ employees at Affymetrix, Inc. in Santa Clara, California on Monday.
