| Everyone feels
the impact when a baby is born with birth defects or mental retardation.
At present in South Carolina, 1500 babies are born with birth defects each
year. An equal number of babies are born with mental retardation.
It is not enough to provide compassionate care for infants born with these
handicaps. Conscience demands that we prevent these defects from
occurring. No justification is needed other than it is the right thing
to do. To this end, the Genetics Endowment of South Carolina has been
established and the goal is simple...to have all babies born with healthy
minds and bodies. The purpose of the Endowment is to
benefit the health of future generations of babies. Income from the
Endowment will be used primarily for investigations carried out in the JC
Self Research Institute of Human Genetics at the Greenwood Genetic Center
and will include joint projects with other research institutions and
universities.
The Endowment is administered by a voluntary Board of
Trustees. No Endowment funds - corpus or interest - will be used for
administration. The corpus of the Endowment is protected against loss
of value due to inflation by the retention of a portion of interest income
equal to inflation each year.
The Genetics Endowment of South Carolina affords you the
opportunity to help our next generation of children. Many giving
choices include an annual or one time contribution, a gift in honor or in
memory of a family member or friend, gifts of property, stock or insurance,
and/or the inclusion of the Endowment in your will. You may also
designate your gift to benefit birth defects or mental retardation research.
As a contributor, you will receive an Annual Report of the Greenwood Genetic
Center each January.
