Department of Disabilities and Special Needs Patient Referrals
|
|
For the past 25 years, the Department of Disabilities and
Special Needs and the Greenwood Genetic Center have worked together to
identify the causes of mental retardation and related disabilities in our
State. These services are offered as one part of the overall medical
services provided by the Department. Each year 55,000 babies are born
within our State. Over 1,000 of these new arrivals will develop
significant learning problems that require active medical, social,
educational and personal care and supervision. In addition to these new
cases, there are over 10,000 adults who receive care through the DDSN
system. Genetic services, which include examination, testing and
counseling are available to all families served by the Department of
Disabilities and Special Needs. The services are a part of the overall
medical services provided.
We believe that by providing the most comprehensive
services and genetic evaluations, counseling and laboratory testing, we
can reduce the risk and impact of these disabilities in our State.
To learn more about the complete genetic services
provided by the Department and the Greenwood Genetic Center, please
contact us at 1-864-941-8100 to be mailed a free copy of our videotape,

Down
Syndrome Clinic Patient Referrals
|
|
The Down Syndrome Clinic provides complete evaluation for
infants, children, adolescents and adults with Down syndrome by a team of
medical specialists. Established in 1996, the Down Syndrome Clinic is the
only comprehensive clinic for individuals with Down syndrome in South
Carolina.
Individuals with Down syndrome are at a higher risk for
certain medical problems. The clinic provides preventive medical
screening, initial and follow-up developmental assessments. The clinical
staff was assembled with the unique needs of individuals with Down
syndrome in mind. The staff includes a clinical geneticist, psychologist,
dietitian, occupational therapist, physical therapist, social worker,
speech pathologist, audiologist, and parents from the local Down syndrome
support group.
Visits to the Down Syndrome Clinic are appropriate for
all ages. A separate genetic visit would be most beneficial soon after
birth to discuss the diagnosis and to receive counseling. Once a patient
has been initially evaluated, we recommend visits at the following times
unless otherwise specified by the clinical staff: first visit between 6-12
months of age; annually at 1, 2, and 3 years of age; and every 2-3 years
from age 4 into adulthood. The clinic does not replace the primary care
provided by the patient's pediatrician, family physician or internist.
The Down Syndrome Clinic is held on the third Wednesday
of each month from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. For appointments, please call
the Clinic Coordinator at (888) 442-4363 (toll-free) or (864) 941-8160. |
