COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Information

The Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) continues to monitor the situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) and has made operational changes to minimize the spread of the virus.

Our employees have been instructed on standard procedures to prevent the spread of this illness such as hand washing, social distancing, and staying home if they are exhibiting any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or other contagious illnesses. Employees are required to wear face masks when social distancing is not possible. We are also maximizing cleaning efforts in all of our offices. Many GGC employees have been fully vaccinated.

All patients and visitors to our campus must undergo health screening prior to entering our facility and are asked to wear masks while inside GGC buildings.

While many patient appointments continue to be held via telegenetics, GGC has returned to in-person visits for those who prefer face-to-face appointments and for situations where virtual visits may not be possible or ideal. In addition to health screening prior to entering our office, patients (over age 2) and family members coming to any of our offices are asked to wear a face mask whenever possible. If you need a face mask, one will be provided for you.

GGC’s Diagnostic Laboratories remain open to accept clinical samples with no delay in processing. Saliva swab kits can be ordered here to be sent to patient homes, and GGC has created a patient instructional video to assist in the collection of these samples.

GGC does not provide testing for COVID-19. If you are a GGC patient and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, coughing, and shortness of breath, contact your primary healthcare provider. Virtual evaluations for COVID-19 can also be arranged through several healthcare organizations across South Carolina. More information on these virtual services can be found here.  GGC is closely monitoring information from the CDC and assessing how this may further impact Center procedures and activities. Additional changes to our operations will be shared on this page.

Should you have concerns or questions about our preparedness or wish to speak with a staff member regarding an upcoming appointment at GGC, please contact the office where you are scheduled.

Lucy's Story

When our daughter Lucy had a metabolic crisis at 7 days old, we were shocked and devastated to find out that she was born with a rare genetic disorder (MSUD). Her newborn screening results did not make it back in time to prevent the crisis, and no one at our local hospital was familiar with the disease. They did not know how to treat her. Calls were made to Greenwood Genetic Center to confirm her diagnosis and guide her care. Dr. Champaigne and Ami...
