Affymetrix Makes Donation to GGC Education

Affymetrix, a California-based company specializing in microarray technology and genomic analysis, has generously donated microarray equipment to the Greenwood
Genetic Center’s Division of Education. The equipment will allow students and teachers involved in GGC’s outreach educational programs to have access
to the state-of-the-art technology of microarray analysis.

Affymetrix presented GGC with a complete GeneAtlas System which is used in clinical diagnostic laboratories. This system is designed to provide simple
microarray processing. The Education Division is creating student activities to simulate patient scenarios that could be diagnosed using this technology.
These activities will be available to high school and college students visiting the Greenwood Genetic Center or participating in the Gene Machine Mobile
Science Laboratory outreach program.

“We are thrilled to support the Greenwood Genetic Center’s educational outreach programs through a donation of more than $100,000 in equipment for genetic
analysis applications,” shared Dara Grantham Wright, VP of Clinical Genetics for Affymetrix. “Affymetrix values the opportunity to support GGC as they
educate the next generation of clinical geneticists”

GGC’s Cytogenetics Laboratory has been employing Affymetrix platforms for their clinical studies since 2010. The microarray technology allows for the detection
of chromosome deletions and duplications that may not be visible with standard cytogenetics methods such as karyotyping. It is widely used as a first
line test for individuals suspected of having disorders with a potential genetic etiology.

About Affymetrix

A pioneer in microarray technology and a leader in genomics analysis, Affymetrix now develops and provides innovative technologies that enable multiplex
and parallel analysis of biological systems at the cell, protein, and gene level, facilitating the rapid translation of results into biology for a
better world. Our extensive portfolio of transitional and clinical solutions enables scientists and clinicians to rapidly translate their research
into understanding underlying disease mechanisms, identifying biomarkers for personalized medicine, creating novel molecular diagnostic tests, and
improving genetic marker-assisted breeding programs in agriculture for human health and wellness.

We strive to provide leadership and support, partnering with our customers in their quest for answers toward clinical utility and routine use. Our mission
is to enable the translation of biological knowledge into routine practice.

Lucy's Story

When our daughter Lucy had a metabolic crisis at 7 days old, we were shocked and devastated to find out that she was born with a rare genetic disorder (MSUD). Her newborn screening results did not make it back in time to prevent the crisis, and no one at our local hospital was familiar with the disease. They did not know how to treat her. Calls were made to Greenwood Genetic Center to confirm her diagnosis and guide her care. Dr. Champaigne and Ami...
